Las Vegas

Las Vegas is Spanish for "The Meadows” and is situated in a basin on the floor of the Mojave Desert, surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides. Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. It is the 28th-most populated city in the United States, and the most populated city in the state of Nevada. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife.

Las Vegas is labeled “The Entertainment Capital of the World,” and is famous for its mega casino–hotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. The Las Vegas Strip annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of "Sin City.”

The Las Vegas Valley has recently become home to a few major professional sports teams: the Vegas Golden Knights (NHL), an expansion team that began play in the 2017–18 season out of T-Mobile Arena, and the Las Vegas Aces (WNBA) who played their inaugural season (2018) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. In 2020, the Oakland Raiders (NFL) will relocate to Allegiant Stadium, which is currently under construction.

There are also two minor league sports teams that play in the Las Vegas area as well. The Las Vegas Aviators of the Pacific Coast League, the AAA farm club of the Oakland Athletics (MLB) play at Las Vegas Ballpark in Summerlin, and the Las Vegas Lights FC of the United Soccer League, play out of Cashman Field in Downtown Las Vegas.
